Dear email,
One of the measures of civilization is how people treat animals. I’m an animal lover; we can learn so much from them. To treat animals as somehow “less” than us never ever sits right with me. I have learned how to be a better human from living with animals – and I hope the animals I have lived with would agree! We must protect not only them, but also their ecosystems. Respecting animals means respecting the planet, and vice versa. I remember watching the documentary series Life on Earth, by one of the greatest advocates of the natural world of the past century, David Attenborough. He certainly affected my life on Earth, by instilling in me a love and respect for nature. You can read all about him below, and also about a festival dedicated to birding in the wild.
Next week, my co-host Inez Sharp will have some more entertaining stories for you from around the English-speaking world.

matrescence
Did you know...? Everyone knows that adolescence is a difficult phase of life – but what about “matrescence”? This word was first used in the 1970s by medical anthropologist Dana Raphael to describe the process of becoming a mother. It’s now the subject of a worldwide campaign to recognize the intense physical, emotional, hormonal and social changes that women experience at this time, and to give them the help they need.

Wild birding

We may not realize it, but birds play a vital role in our lives. When we hear a bird’s morning song, we know it’s springtime. If we see birds flying south, we know that winter is coming. And if birds start acting strangely, it’s a sign that our natural environment is changing.
World Migratory Bird Day – tomorrow, and again on 11 October – is a day to recognize the importance of birds and promote bird conservation efforts.
Also in May, birders can witness more than 300 bird species in one of the wildest natural environments, at the first-ever Jackson Hole Birding Festival, in Wyoming. The three-day event – beginning on 22 May – offers an immersive educational experience for birders and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

The younger brother of actor, director and producer Richard Attenborough, David started working at the BBC in 1952, and has gone on to become one of television’s best-loved broadcasters, bringing the natural world into our homes with celebrated series such as Blue Planet and Our Planet. Working the land

With more than 400 commodities, the Golden State is America’s top agricultural producer and exporter. About 40 per cent of California’s land area is used for agriculture, producing more than a third of the country’s vegetables, and three-quarters of its fruits and nuts. The crops grown here tend to be high-value commodities. For comparison, while an acre of corn or soybeans may produce up to $1,500 in revenue, an acre of strawberries can generate over $100,000.
However, California’s agriculture is also very Âlabour-intensive and depends greatly on the more than 850,000 farmworkers who are employed across the state during a typical year. Most are seasonal workers and immigrants from Mexico – about half of whom are undocumented. There are fears that the harsh Âimmigration policies introduced by the Trump administration may cause a shortage of agricultural labour in California and other states. That would not only lead to higher food prices for American consumers, but could potentially threaten the financial security of many of California’s farms.
