Dear email,
Taylor Swift has been “having a moment” ever since she was named Best New Artist by the Country Music Association back in 2007. Last year, she became Spotify’s most played artist and in 2024, she became a billionaire. Find out about the Swiftie fanbase in our newsletter and listen to the Spotlight team talking about Swift in our English, please! podcast. We also write about her path to fame in the current issue of our magazine. There are thousands and thousands of pictures of the singer, so we found it hard to choose just one for the cover. That's why there are two versions. The eMagazine cover features an intimate, close-up portrait of Swift, where she looks both strong and vulnerable, while the print cover features an illustration by US artist Lisa Merklin. Merklin has interpreted the Swift song "Florida!!!", which was released in 2024, and created a photo illustration for the song. We hope that, regardless of whether or not you’re a Swiftie, you’ll enjoy finding out about the phenomenal rise and rise of Taylor Swift – it’s her story, of course, but also a story for our time.

Equality in science
The fact that many women in science have not received credit for all they’ve achieved is well known. What is surprising, however, is just how many overlooked people there are. Dr Jessica Wade, a physicist from the English city of Manchester, has written more than 2,000 Wikipedia biographies of female and minority scientists who are underrated, or not well known. “I’m constantly astounded by who doesn’t have a Wikipedia page,” the 35-year-old told The Guardian. This, Wade says, is because Wikipedia editors are themselves not a very diverse group. So, in 2017, she started taking matters into her own hands, spending a few hours each night writing a new biography.
In STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths), the gender and racial gaps are particularly wide. Among Nobel Prize winners and university professors, women (especially women of colour) are greatly under-represented, while fewer girls than boys choose these subjects at school. Of more than 6,600 professors currently working in STEM in Britain, just 25 are Black.
Wade is a member of the Faculty of Engineering at Imperial College London. “Science has so many huge open challenges – from sustainable materials for electronics to climate change...,” she says. “We need really diverse teams working on them, to solve them and improve public trust.”

Elections in the UK
Why do Brits usually vote on Thursdays?
Next Thursday, people from all over the UK will elect the new Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons.
But why are general elections usually held on a Thursday? This is a historical convention rather than a rule: workers often got paid on Fridays and would go to the pub; on Sundays, they’d go to church. Holding the election on a Thursday meant they wouldn’t be influenced by alcohol or the Church. Also, Thursday was often market day in towns and villages, so people were out and about anyway.
