Dear email,
Everyone says German is a difficult language to learn. I had French for many years in school. In college, however, I gave up on French and started learning German, which I didn’t find nearly as difficult. English, after all, is a Germanic language. Certainly the accent was easier to master than French, and there aren’t so many apostrophes! It had a certain logic to it. So I learned German well enough to speak it (basically) in four semesters.
However, even after decades in Germany, there’s still one thing I find difficult: knowing the gender of the nouns. OK: -ung is feminine, -chen is neuter, -ling is masculine, etc. There are a few rules which are easy to memorize. But the rest you just have to know, and that’s difficult! Luckily for our readers, English articles aren’t quite that difficult. But there are some rules, and we tell you what they are below, amongst many other items we have for you.
Next week, my co-host Inez Sharp will have some more entertaining stories for you from around the English-speaking world.

Conductor in the cockpit
For decades, Daniel Harding has been one of the world’s top orchestra conductors. That would probably be enough for most people, but Harding also has another career – as an airline pilot.
Harding has always been a high achiever. Born in Oxford, in 1975, he began playing the trumpet when he was eight. For fun, he tried conducting, practising at home. His conducting career began aged 17, after his teacher wrote to Sir Simon Rattle, describing Harding’s talent. Working with Rattle at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), Harding was a fast learner, making his professional debut with the orchestra at 19 and, later, winning the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Best Debut award. From there, he became the first music director of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, worked as the principal conductor of the Trondheim Symphony, in Norway, and was the music director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He’s also been a guest conductor for many other well-known orchestras around the world.
In 2019, he took a break from conducting to become an airline pilot for Air France, although his plans were delayed by the pandemic. Today, he balances flying and conducting. “I don’t think it’s realistic to say, just because you love something, you should do it 24 hours a day, every single day,” he told The New York Times.
