Mark Carney?
|
|
|
|
|
Mark Carney won the election in April to become Canada’s new prime minister, and many say he has Donald Trump to thank for his victory. At the start of the year, Carney’s rival, Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative Party, was ahead in the polls. Then, Trump threatened Canada with 25 per cent tariffs and, bizarrely, to make it the 51st US state.
While Poilievre was seen as an ally of Trump, Carney positioned himself as the best candidate to oppose the US president. He said in his victory speech: “President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never, ever happen.”
Born in Canada’s Northwest Territories, Carney, 60, studied at Harvard and Oxford universities before starting a career in finance. He was governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England before being appointed the UN’s special envoy on climate action and finance in December 2019. In March 2025, he became the leader of Canada’s Liberal Party.

The gardener of Alcatraz
|

“I am a gardener on the island of Alcatraz. Most people know Alcatraz as a prison, which has a long and interesting history, but they’re usually surprised to see the gardens on the island. The first decorative plants on Alcatraz were put here in the 1860s. They were part of the lighthouse keeper’s small garden. The island had been turned into a military fortress in 1859 and was used to hold prisoners during the US Civil War. After that, it became a military prison and, later, a federal prison before it finally closed, in 1963.
“Alcatraz Island became a national park in 1972. Even though the gardens were forgotten for 40 years, around 200 plant species survived. When I started working here as a full-time gardener, in 2006, I studied the research archives that had been put together by the previous program manager. With the help of the US National Park Service, I was able to see what the gardens would have looked like. We have strict rules about historical accuracy.
“The gardens wouldn’t be possible without the volunteers who help with the gardening work. Alcatraz belongs to the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, which is a network of historical sites that teaches people about human rights. As part of this, I do educational community work on sustainable gardening and climate change, and on the healing power of gardens, especially for people who are incarcerated.”
