Easter is one of my favourite holidays. Not for religious reasons (although Iâll be looking at the Gen Z Bible Stories version of Easter) â more for pagan ones. Spring is underway and, even if the weatherâs cold, I know that sunshine and warmth are just around the corner. Itâs the time to make hot cross buns for Good Friday â we talk about those in the podcast â and in my British-German household, Iâll be unpacking the wooden Easter eggs I collect from the Erzgebirge and decorating them on branches in a Wedgwood vase.
Finally, thereâs the mandatory Easter Sunday walk to work off all that chocolate, and then thereâs still the Monday holiday to look forward to. What could be better?

Did you know...? On the TikTok account Gen Z Bible Stories, God is called the âtop Gâ. Jesus is the âdivine broâ and the gospel is the âholy teaâ. The account started last year and now has almost 400,000 followers. It offers versions of Bible stories written in âthe language of Gen Zâ. While some say the stories are blasphemous, others think they could inspire more Gen Zers to read the Bible and become interested in religion.

Raisins and mixed spice in fluffy dough: thatâs hot cross buns. The sweet rolls are traditionally eaten at Easter in Great Britain and Ireland (unless you grew up in a hippyish household, like Spotlightâs audio editor Owen...). For the latest episode of our podcast English, please!, Inez Sharp, Nadia Lawrence and Owen Connors come together for a baking session and to reminisce about the Easters of their childhood.

Did you know that over 4,000 tonnes of card packaging were used for Easter eggs in 2023 in the UK alone? Paper packaging waste is increasing, but it's not the only industry struggling to reduce its reliance on paper. From cartography to healthcare, many industries just can't give it up.
Paper is still vital for reliable navigation at sea, for example. The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is responsible for keeping about 3,500 nautical charts up to date. A weekly bulletin communicates the latest updates to ships around the world, and crew members make corrections by hand.
The UKHO had planned to switch to digital-only maps by 2026, but this deadline has now been scrapped. A lot of ships are capable of carrying only paper charts, and no suitable electronic platforms are currently available. Steven Bastable, product manager at the UKHO, told the BBC: âIt became clear that there was a problem ... if we went too quickly on this, there was a very real risk that we would leave mariners behind.â
Many others are also struggling with the digital transition â particularly in highly regulated industries that have strict rules about record-keeping. The US federal government finally went paperless in June 2024, after several years of delays.
