Dear email,
Do you ever feel unsure of yourself, at work or in your private life? Do you wonder: Can I do it? Will I succeed? I’m a pretty confident person and know, after weighing the pros and cons of a challenge put to me, realistically if I can or cannot. Usually, I’m up for it and face the challenge. A lack of confidence, however, can be stifling to many people and hinder them in achieving their potential. But we’re here to help! Below, we have an article for you with 10 tips to boost self-confidence. You can do it! You can also read about someone who must be abundantly confident – Dr. David Nott, a British surgeon who works on the front lines of wars.
Next week, my colleague Inez Sharp will be back with some more entertaining stories for you.

Did you know...? In Gen Z slang, “cooked” doesn’t refer to a meal that’s ready to eat – instead, it means being in trouble, in a hopeless situation, or very tired.

Jersey bean crock
You can’t visit the small Channel island of Jersey without eating a bean crock. This special meaty bean meal is found everywhere, so much so that the locals are known as “Jersey beans”!
Jersey bean crock (serves 3–4) Ingredients • 1 pork knuckle • 500 g mixed dried beans • 1 carrot • 1 onion • 2 (ham) stock cubes • small bunches of parsley and thyme • salt • black pepper
Preparation Soak the beans all day or overnight in cold water. Pour off the water, rinse the beans and place them in a crock pot. Peel and chop the carrot and onion, and add them to the beans. Add the pork knuckle, stock cubes and herbs, pouring in enough boiling water to cover everything.
Cook in a hot oven (200 °C) all day or overnight. Before serving, transfer the pork knuckle to a plate and remove the meat, then put the meat back in the crock. Add salt and black pepper to taste.

The war doctor
Doing surgery is difficult and stressful at the best of times. How much harder must it be in an active war zone? British surgeon David Nott has worked in some of the most dangerous conflicts around the world – including in Africa, Syria and Ukraine.
Nott has saved countless lives and, at times, put his own life in danger. He was shot at in Sarajevo, for example, and operated on a young girl in Gaza while the hospital was being bombed. In 2015, he started the Nott Foundation, which gives doctors and nurses training for war zones. He was among the first foreign doctors to travel to eastern Ukraine, providing treatment and training.
War causes horrific physical injuries that civilian doctors rarely see. However, not all injuries are visible. Being on the front line exposes doctors and nurses to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Nott has his own method of dealing with it. “What allows you to get over it is being active,” he told the Financial Times. “PTSD is like going through hell, but you’ve just got to keep going ... When people around you are saying you’ve got to have a break, no – keep going!”
