Dear email,
For all the technological advancements of today’s world, retro is still a thing. Vinyl albums, vintage clothing, classic cars … and even vintage rail travel. (I, personally, would be very tempted to cruise through Europe on the old Orient Express.) This year, rail travel is celebrating its 200th anniversary on September 27th, when the first train took its maiden journey. Below, you can read about the original train, and when and where you can ride on a steam train across the UK.
Further on the subject of retro, there is also a growing trend among Gen Z to go offline and use “dumbphones,” rather than smartphones, for a healthier lifestyle. Listen to an interview with the creator of the Light Phone, designed for this purpose.
Next week, I’ll be back with some more entertaining stories for you from around the English-speaking world.

breadcrumbing
Did you know...? Taken from modern dating vocabulary, the word “breadcrumbing” is used at work to describe behaviours that show encouragement without offering employees tangible rewards. It’s a manipulative approach: the mention of a promotion or promise of other perks, for example, that don’t actually materialize.

All aboard for Railway 200, celebrating the birth of the modern railway! On 27 September 1825, a steam locomotive travelled between three towns in north-east England. This marked the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the world’s first passenger steam locomotive, and the birth of the modern railway. The UK’s celebration of this 200th anniversary includes the touring train exhibition Inspiration. The train is travelling across the UK until next summer. Emma Roberts of Railway 200 told the BBC this would be an “unforgettable experience”.

A phone that does less
Many of us spend hours scrolling on our phones, not thinking about the impact it has on the way we live our lives. Some people are now actively trying to reduce the amount of time they spend staring at screens, and are buying so-called “dumbphones” instead. Joe Hollier co-created the Light Phone, which aims to counteract the addictiveness of smartphones. Listen to him talk about why he decided to create such a device.

Skills development

The global consulting firm McKinsey says there’s more to an employee than a university degree. Employers should think about skills and “non-traditional talent” that might include the right qualities to do a job well. Some large employers, including IBM, Boeing and Walmart, no longer have degree requirements for certain jobs, giving them a bigger, more diverse pool of candidates.
Nearly two-thirds (63 per cent) of employers say the current skills gaps in the labour market are a major barrier to business transformation, and 85 per cent plan to upskill their workforce by 2030.
McKinsey says 84 per cent of international employees say they receive significant AI training. However, McKinsey also reports high levels of uncertainty: “Employers do not know how many AI experts they will need with what type of skills.”
