Dear email,
|
|
|
Time for English – that’s the name of this newsletter (albeit in German), and time is on my mind today. The clocks are springing forward soon – but does it really matter? I have always been fascinated by the concept of time and space, and by the concept of spacetime, which includes theories of different speeds of time. Do you experience time differently in different situations? Below, you can read about that phenomenon. You can also read a bit about how to say and write times and dates correctly in English to avoid confusion. If you’d like to learn more about that, pick up a copy of the current issue of Business Spotlight, on sale until April 24.
Next week, my colleague Inez Sharp will be back with some more entertaining stories for you.

Did you know...? Digital sobriety means using digital technology in a careful, limited way, instead of using it all of the time, automatically. The goal is better health, focus, and balance, and sometimes less energy use, which is better for the environment.

| Answers: 1. C); 2. A). In different cultures and linguistic regions, timelines or chronologies are expressed horizontally or vertically, and time in terms of volume (big/much), distance (long/short) or even directional (east/west). Western cultures often view time as a linear, forward-moving line (past to future), and some societies and cultures (e.g., Hindu/Buddhist traditions) view time as cyclical.

Times and dates

|
Struggling to plan a meeting? Sometimes it has nothing to do with someone’s calendar being full. Communicating dates and times can be a minefield, but we’re here to help! Find some useful tips below, and pick up the current issue of Business Spotlight for a comprehensive guide.
How to write dates If you want to schedule a meeting on the 12th of October, write: 12 October 2026
This form is most commonly used in British English, but everyone will understand it. Americans reverse the day and the month and use a comma after the day: October 12, 2026
How to include the day of the week If you would like to include the day of the week, as additional detail, write it before the date with a comma after it: Thursday, 12 October 2026 (UK) Thursday, October 12, 2026 (US)
The time in English Writing the time in English is less complicated than writing the date. However, there are a few things you should know. If you’re travelling around the UK or Ireland, you may see times written using the 24-hour system: 16:30 and so on. However, in spoken English, it is more usual to say 4.30 p.m.
