Dear email,
Do you have a prescription for the perfect weekend? If I may share mine with you, it would include at least some of the following. After work on Friday, I’d make a list of fun things to do, based on the idea of slow living. Ideally, it would include a long walk. If I were at home, the walk would be in countryside like that of the Fens in eastern England: a landscape that is flat and open, near the sea, with big skies and changing cloudscapes.
Next, I’d visit an inspiring place. Charleston, the Sussex home of the Bloomsbury Group is perfect. These painters, writers and designers lived a truly bohemian life, and Charleston, now a museum, embodies that.
Finally, I’d spend Sunday evening watching Kyla Scanlon’s videos on economics. Ok, I’m joking, but honestly, her tutorials are great, and if, like me, your understanding of economics could do with a brush-up, I’d really recommend them. You can find out more about these activities below.

slow living

Did you know...? Life isn’t a rat race: it’s for living! That’s why so many people are engaging in “slow living”, a cultural movement that encourages us to slow down, live in the moment and be thankful for what we have, instead of always trying to obtain more. Slowing down also gives us time to prioritize what’s important and try to live in a way that is more intentional, meaningful and sustainable.

Two days in the Fens
The Fens are an area of (former) marshland and small lakes covering 4,000 square kilometres of eastern England. The region is home to 9,600 species (including this beautiful brown Highland cow) and attracts more and more human visitors.

The Bloomsbury Group

“The way they lived was unashamedly eccentric”
An illustrious round of English artists, spending some quality time together: Vanessa Bell, painter and sister of Virginia Woolf, is giving the writer Lytton Strachey a haircut, while painter Roger Fry, art critic Clive Bell and painter Duncan Grant look on and offer some useful advice...
The photo was taken around 1920 and shows members of the Bloomsbury Group, a literary and artistic circle that was known for its free-spirited lifestyle. You can still visit their colourful country house in Sussex. Spotlight editor-in-chief Inez Sharp explains why you should!

Do the right thing
There was a time when all a business needed to do was provide a good product or service at an affordable price. Today, however, people expect companies, and especially large corporations, to do a lot more than that – in the name of corporate social responsibility (CSR).
Why is corporate social activism becoming more important? Find out in our interview with Nooshin Warren, an associate professor of marketing and Eller Faculty fellow at the University of Arizona.

Gen Z’s favourite economist

Can finance be fun? Kyla Scanlon thinks so. The 27-year-old from Louisville, Kentucky, is a financial educator, content creator and author. She studied financial management, economics and business data analytics at Western Kentucky University’s Gordon Ford College of Business.
With her financial-literacy company, called Bread, Scanlon creates short, entertaining social media videos that explain complex finance topics and developments in the economy. She has a strategy to speak to her Gen Z audience: “The idea is we have to gamify financial education … it’s all about how we get people involved in the economy,” she told CNBC. “You have to make it fun. … That really humanizes finance and brings people in.”
Scanlon invented the term “vibecession” to describe worries about the economy despite many positive economic indicators. She thinks concerns about the future get worse when people don’t understand what’s going on. She’s made it her mission to change that.
