Dear email,
On my bookshelf is a large hardback tome with photos of the American fashion icon Iris Apfel (1921–2024). While maximalist fashion (see below) may be having a moment on social media, Iris was the queen of maximalism, dedicated to an extravagantly opulent style, and looking at photos of her wild outfits always lifts my spirits.
Also dedicated to their craft are the artisans we present in the article Crafting a culture. Meet a company of globemakers whose products are very much in demand, and the lace-makers who created lace for the wedding dress of the Princess of Wales. The joy and satisfaction these craftspeople bring to their work shines throughout this story.
Finally, hats off to Sophia Park, who recently qualified as a lawyer aged just 17! May she have a long and successful career ahead of her.
Next week, my co-host Judith Gilbert will have more entertaining stories for you from around the English-speaking world.

maximalist fashion

Did you know...? “Maximalist fashion” is all about being as extreme and theatrical as possible, by wearing contrasting colours and patterns and lots of accessories. It’s been around for many years. Now, it’s being popularized on social media, with #maximalists posting photos of their eccentric outfits.

Arts, crafts and “bonkbusters”
In this week’s episode of English, please!, you’ll get to know the Spotlight team’s creative side. Inez Sharp and Nadia Lawrence, from the UK, and Mae McCreary, from the US, talk about sewing, knitting and cardboard installations in the kitchen.
In our book tip, we introduce you to a different creative genre: “bonkbusters”. Don’t worry if you’ve never heard the word before. Our word nerd Owen Connors will explain what this frivolous variation of the word “blockbuster” means.

Career Coach
The story of your project
Project updates can be terribly boring. But they don’t have to be! Our career coach Frank Peters offers tips on how you can use storytelling to get everyone on board – without anyone falling asleep!
1. Warm-up People can’t always be creative on command, so warm-up improvisation exercises might help.
2. Project stories Divide your team into groups. Each group chooses a hero: a project team or team member, the company, a customer... The hero should be at the heart of the story and experience a transformation.
For ongoing projects, groups can imagine future events. Encourage vivid descriptions and concrete examples – illustrations and a bit of exaggeration are allowed.
3. Present the stories Encourage theatrical presentations that include role-plays or props, for example. The key is to have fun and engage the audience.
4. Reflection Each group should reflect on what they’ve learned about their project, themselves and their team. You might be surprised by their insights. Discuss these together.
5. Finish Ask everyone to write down their key takeaway or favourite quote on a sticky note and place it on a wall. This creates a visual memory of the workshop and the lively project reports.

Teenage lawyer
Being a lawyer is a desirable profession. Especially, in the US, lawyers have a lot of opportunities and can earn high salaries. To become a practising lawyer, one must not only study law but also gain a licence from the state – known as the bar. State bar exams are notoriously difficult. In California, the pass rate is under 54 per cent.
In November 2024, Sophia Park, a teenager from Orange County, became the youngest person ever to pass California’s state bar exam, aged 17 years and eight months. In doing so, she beat the previous record, set a year earlier by her own brother. “I don’t think it was extremely difficult,” she told the news channel Fox40.
Park began studying law when she was 13 and still in junior high school, taking advantage of a state rule that allows students to qualify through the College Level Examination Program, even without a high-school diploma. Leah Wilson, the State Bar of California’s executive director, told ABC News: “Passing the state bar exam at any age is a tremendous accomplishment, and to do so at 17 is truly exceptional.”
Now that she’s a qualified lawyer, Park says she wants to work for the prosecution. “I like the idea that I get to represent the people of the state of California, keep our community safe and make sure that justice is served,” she told The Sun-Gazette.
