Dear email,
Do you work in attractive surroundings? I’ve done plenty of jobs over the years, but one of my favourites – other than Spotlight, of course – was at a publishing house in a tiny, old townhouse with creaking wooden floors, beamed ceilings and a view from my window across a river. That job has a special place in my heart mainly due to the wonderful building and its surroundings. What do the employees at the Amazon headquarters in Seattle think of their amazing offices? Do they like going to work? Find the answer to this, and read about other cool office buildings, below.
While I love my job, I love my holidays just a tiny bit more – and this is the time of year when many of us like to plan that time off. If you’re looking for the vocabulary to talk about taking holidays, you’ll find it in this newsletter.
Next week, my colleague Judith Gilbert will be back with more entertaining stories from around the English-speaking world.

tradwife
Did you know...? Thanks to feminism, women today have more choices than ever before. Some, known as “tradwives”, choose to focus on supporting their husbands, taking care of the kids and keeping the house clean. The word is especially common in social media, where some women advocate for this traditional kind of lifestyle.

Say it in two words
Full sentences? – No, thanks! Two words? – Yes, please!
You don’t always need to build complex sentences to express what you want to say. Sometimes two words are enough. Here are some useful two-word phrases for everyday situations:
Aim high! Du musst deine Ziele hoch stecken! Baby steps! Ein Schritt nach dem anderen! Back off! Verschwinde! Lass mich in Ruhe! Deep breaths! Tief durchatmen! Help yourself! Bedien dich! My treat! Das geht auf mich! Ich lade dich ein! Only joking! War nur ein Witz! Who knew?! Wer hätte das gedacht?! Must dash! Ich muss los. So long! Wiedersehen! You wish! Das hättest du wohl gerne!

“The Irish have a lot of superstitions”
Cutting down a fairy tree? This could get you in trouble, according to Irish folklore. The mystical creatures still play a surprisingly important role in modern Ireland. In 1999, construction plans for a highway had to be changed after a folklorist warned about the effects of destroying or replanting a certain whitethorn tree.
Hear more about myths and superstitions − not only from Ireland − in our latest episode of the podcast English, please!

Haupia – Hawaiian Coconut Pudding
Ingredients • 1 can of full-fat coconut milk • 5 tbsp cornflour • 5 tbsp granulated sugar • ¾ cup of water
Preparation Heat the coconut milk in a saucepan over medium heat. Meanwhile, combine the sugar and cornflour in a bowl, then mix in the water. Once the coconut milk is simmering, add the mixture and whisk for about ten minutes, until it thickens and begins to look slightly translucent. Pour into a rectangular pie dish and allow the mixture to cool before refrigerating until solid. Once cold, turn the contents of the dish onto a cutting board and cut the jelly into squares. Serve cold with chopped mango or pineapple on top.
