Dear email,
If I said to you that eating a balanced diet is beneficial, would you argue? Probably not. Same with finding a good work-life balance – you’d probably agree that that, too, is healthy and important for success. Often, when people who have reached great, advanced age are asked about their secret to longevity, the answer is: balance, moderation. So recently, when I was asked why diversity is good for business, my first thought was: That’s a stupid question. Of course diversity is good for business, for the same reason that balance is beneficial in other aspects of life, as above. The world is not homogenous and you’re going to get the best results if your product is created by people who have different experiences and perspectives. Below, you can read about how diversity pays dividends.
Next week, my co-host Inez Sharp will have some more entertaining stories for you from around the English-speaking world.

Juneteenth
Have you ever heard of Juneteenth? The word is a portmanteau of “June” and “nineteenth” and refers to 19 June 1865 – the date the Emancipation Proclamation was enforced in Texas, at the end of the American Civil War. It became a federal holiday in the US in 2021. Find out more about it by listening to our audio article.

Grammar

“One”, “ones” and “some”
Do you know when to use “one” or "ones” and when to use “some”? It’s not always obvious.
To avoid repeating a noun, use... ...one for singular countable nouns: Have you got a broom? – Yes, there’s one in the cupboard.
...some for singular uncountable or plural nouns: • There’s cheese in the fridge. Do you want some? • Those cherries look nice. Let’s buy some.
In adjective + noun phrases, use... ...one for singular countable nouns: • My phone isn’t working. I need to buy a new one.
...ones for plural countable nouns: • He tried to sell me black shoes, but I wanted brown ones.
With uncountable nouns, either repeat the noun or leave it out: • Do you prefer red wine or white wine? • What kind of beer do you want: German or Belgian?
