Dear email,
Ever since I was a kid, I have loved detective and spy stories. One of the first movies I ever saw was On Her Majesty’s Secret Service at the dollar-movie theater around the corner from where I grew up. Oh, how I loved James Bond films! Even at an early age, I wanted to go to Europe after seeing the gorgeous places 007 had his adventures in. And: I wanted to be a spy! I promise, I am not. But, below, you can read about the new female chief of MI6, on His Majesty’s secret service. And, on the subject of intelligence gathering, these days, some detective work is required where it never used to be. Human Resources departments everywhere are having now to determine which job applicants are real people – and which are chatbots posing as humans. You can read about that, and more, below. Next week, my colleague Inez Sharp, who is a real person, will be back with some more entertaining stories for you.

Are health metrics hurting our mental health?
Do you own a fitness watch or ring? Do you monitor your sleep to maximize rest? According to research, the market for wearable health devices is set to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 25 per cent from 2025 to 2030. Here, you can read two differing opinions on the topic.

“When” and “if”
Do you know when to use “when” and when to use “if”? Read the rules below then test yourself to see if you understood everything.
We use when + present simple to talk about something that will definitely happen in the future: I’ll send you a text when I get to the airport. (= I’ll certainly get to the airport.)
We use if + present simple to talk about things that may happen in the future: I’ll send you a message if the flight is delayed. (= Maybe the flight will be delayed, but I don’t know.)
We use unless + present simple to mean “except if” or “if not”: I’ll get to the hotel around 3 p.m., unless the flight’s delayed. (= If it’s delayed, I’ll get there later.)
Quick test 1. I’ll probably leave on time, I’ll text you ___ I leave the office. 2. Will you call me ___ you’re going to be late? 3. I’ll call you ___ the meeting runs late.

Who exactly is… Blaise Metreweli?
Career intelligence officer Blaise Metreweli lost her anonymity in June when she was named the first female chief of the UK’s Secret Intelligence Service, MI6. A little more than a week later, the Daily Mail reported that Metreweli was the granddaughter of Constantine Dobrowolski, a Red Army officer who collaborated with invading Nazi forces during the Second World War and participated in the murder of Jews in Ukraine. Dobrowolski was known as “The Butcher”. In response, the Foreign Office said Metreweli “neither knew nor met” Dobrowolski and that her family history had “contributed to her commitment to prevent conflict and protect the British public from modern threats from today’s hostile states, as the next chief of MI6.” Metreweli, 48, studied anthropology at Cambridge University before joining MI6 in 1999. She has worked in the Middle East and Europe, and says she is “proud and honoured” to be the new M16 chief, a position in which she will be known as “C”.
