A couple of weeks ago, in preparation for an interview with Annette Dittert, I read her book Dear Britain. The 11 political essays by the former ARD London correspondent cover topics such as the state of Britain's rivers and coastal waters (shockingly shitty), and the House of Lords (fascinatingly arcane). For a Brit like me, who believes in muddling through and ignoring too many uncomfortable truths, Dear Britain was a bracing read. In spite of, or rather because of this, I would thoroughly recommend the book. I learned a lot about my home country, and what shines from every page, even when Dittert is presenting the most unpalatable insights, is a tender affection for Britain and the Brits. When I told German friends that I was interviewing Annette Dittert, they were universally positive about her TV news reports from London. Many also mentioned her colourful dress sense. Very refreshing when these days tones of “greige” seem to be everywhere. Find out why the world is embracing neutrals in our lifestyle feature.

At 74, Rita Collins has taken her retirement on the road. Her white van, Saint Rita’s Amazing Traveling Bookstore, carries about 700 books across America, stopping at markets, museums, brew pubs, and town events. Collins wanted freedom rather than a fixed shop, so she invested in a van fitted with wooden shelves set at a 15-degree angle to keep the books in place. The books are donated, affordable, and arranged by subject. For Collins, the books are only the beginning. What matters most are the conversations they start, and the connections that happen whenever she opens the van door. “My work is talking to people,” she told The New York Times.
