Dear email,
Have I written before about my love of language in these editorials? If so, please excuse the repetition. Anyway, 26 September is the European Day of Languages, so this time the topic of language is definitely legit. My colleagues at Business Spotlight have been looking at levels of formality in English. It’s something I like to think about: the effect of changing words or sentences to signal a particular tone or intention. As we don’t have a Sie form in English, different structures and nuances come into play. Fascinating! Find out more below.
My love of languages extends beyond English and German, of course. My Polish neighbour recently told me that the equivalent of the idiom “Pigs will fly” in Polish is Prędzej mi kaktus na dłoni urośnie (Sooner a cactus will grow on my palm). Amazing and very memorable. If you enjoy this kind of language nerdiness, why not try the quiz in this newsletter.
Next time, my colleague Petra Daniell will be here to tell you about our upcoming special issue.

nanny state
Did you know...? A “nanny state” is a negative way of describing a government that legislates to protect its citizens. A “nanny” is a person who looks after small children, so “nanny state” suggests that the government is treating its citizens like children and interfering in their lives. It implies that we can’t be trusted to make our own decisions – that our personal freedoms are being taken away by an over-protective authority figure.

Securing the EU’s internet

Nearly 99 per cent of intercontinental internet traffic runs through hundreds of cables under the sea. They are the backbone of today’s digital economy and, with that, global stability and security. In recent years, however, we’ve seen that this infrastructure is vulnerable. How can undersea cables be protected?

A London mudlark

Liz Anderson has a job that doesn’t exist in many places. She spends her days sifting through London’s mud. What’s she looking for? And why did she give up her career as a teacher to spend her days wading along the riverbank of the Thames? Spotlight editor Lorraine Turner Akcakaya spoke to the Londoner.
