Dear email,
I don’t know how you feel, but I am disturbed to my core by the state of the world today. Whole fractions of people in various countries see the world in terms of “us” and “them” and fail to understand that we are all inhabitants of this planet and would be well advised to live and work as one. Even some politicians and oligarchs on the global stage scorn and attack the concept of empathy as part of their agenda. Really?
Fortunately, there are forces working against this behavior. Below, you can read about one small example. A Netherlands-based company has come up with VR technology to help encourage and enable empathy at the workplace, putting you in the place of someone who is a member of a vulnerable group to help foster understanding and prevent negative behavior.
You can also read about a scientist who has developed technology for space exploration that may help to prove that we are not alone in the universe.
Next week, my colleague Inez Sharp will be back with more stories from around the English-speaking world.

Did you know...? This expression refers to the tendency to spend more extravagantly as income increases. Lifestyle creep often happens gradually, making it hard to notice.

Faking it

If you think fake photos are only a modern phenomenon made possible by AI, think again. One of the historical photos included in this year’s celebrations marking 250 years of US independence is actually a fake — and was faked back in 1865. It combines President Abraham Lincoln’s head from a photo taken in 1864 and the body of a politician named John C. Calhoun from a portrait made in 1852.

Always + -ing
You can use “always” with different tenses to mean different things.
If you use “always” with the present simple, you talk about something that happens regularly. For example: • “Her family always comes round for Sunday lunch”
If you use it with the present continuous, it can mean someone does something you find annoying. For example: • “Her family is always coming round for Sunday lunch” – it gives the impression that it’s too often. Instead of “always”, you can use adverbs such as “forever” or “constantly” to show that you find something annoying.

Virtual empathy
Alex Tavassoli, the founder of Enliven Empathy, a Dutch company specializing in virtual-reality (VR) experiences, spoke to Business Spotlight about the power of VR to increase empathy in the workplace. The idea is that a team experiences a situation through a VR headset. After, they have conversations about the experience, which can help influence the company environment. This can lead to real change.

Looking for life

Are we alone in the universe? Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock doesn’t think so. “I truly believe there’s life out there, because it would be conceited to think not,” she told the Financial Times. “But the problem is, the distances between the stars are so vast, will we ever find each other?”
In the search for life beyond earth, a thrilling discovery has been made recently by the James Webb Space Telescope, for which Aderin-Pocock helped design an instrument called a spectroscope. On the planet K2-18b, which is about 120 light years away, molecules have been detected that, on earth at least, are produced only by living organisms.
Born in London in 1968, Aderin-Pocock studied physics and mechanical engineering at Imperial College London. As a scientist and educator, she has designed specialized scientific instruments, including handheld landmine detectors, but also co-hosts the BBC astronomy programme The Sky at Night. In 2009, she was awarded an MBE for her work teaching kids about science and space.
