Dear email,
Life often offers up interesting coincidences. In this newsletter, we focus on environmental topics and, purely by chance, Iâm currently listening to a book called Less: Stop Buying So Much Rubbish: How Having Fewer, Better Things Can Make Us Happier. Itâs by a Scottish businessman and TV presenter called Patrick Grant, and he makes a good case for living a more sustainable lifestyle. While I think of myself as quite green, I do confess to at least some âwishcyclingâ (see below).
On another green topic, I recommend that you listen to our podcast episode on gardening. Susanne, a colleague on the Spotlight editorial team, said that while gardening is not her thing, she really enjoyed listening to other Spotlighters exchange garden stories. So tune in if you want to find out what a strawberry tree is and why my colleague, Owen Connors, named his lawnmower âthe beastâ.
Next week, my co-host Judith Gilbert will have more interesting stories to share from around the English-speaking world.

Did you know...? Are you a hopeless optimist when it comes to waste disposal? Then you might be practising âwishcyclingâ: throwing everything into the recycling bin, without checking whether itâs recyclable or not.

Remote and hybrid work
Itâs been five years since the Covid-19 pandemic forced people around the world into an unexpected social experiment. The disruption this caused in many workplaces was unprecedented, and the effects of this can still be felt today. Covid has stopped appearing in news headlines, but at least for those of us in jobs that can be done remotely, the way we work may never go back to how it used to be. Or could it?
Actually, across the EU, working completely on-site is becoming more common. Percentage of people in EU working fully on-site: 2023: 36% 2024: 41%
However, more people wish to work remotely at least some of the time. Wish to work exclusively from home: 2020: 13% 2024: 24%
Wish to work from home multiple times a week: Women: 56% Men: 54%
