The county of Essex has had a lot of bad press over the years. Situated northeast of London, the region had a higher crime rate than many other parts of the country and sadly has a reputation for being home only to superficial and silly people. Now, as an Essex girl, born and bred, Iâd like to make a case for my home county. Our wonderful travel story will give you an idea of why I love Essex so much â the beautiful wide-open landscapes, the historic town of Colchester and the world-famous local oysters.
And to get some background on how Essex came by its reputation, please listen to our podcast about local identity. As always, it was great fun exchanging stories with other members of the Spotlight team and talking about where we feel our roots are.

Did you know...? The world is in the midst of an epidemic of scams â or "scamdemic". According to the Global Anti-Scam Alliance, online financial scams cost more than $1 trillion in 2024 alone. The situation is particularly bad in Singapore, where scams have become so widespread that the government is considering corporal punishment for offenders.

Going to the grocery shop used to be just another thing everybody had to do. Today, about 600,000 people in North America buy and deliver groceries to customers who order Âthem via the Instacart app. The pandemic is over, but grocery delivery is still very popular. As many as 25 million Americans used Instacart in 2024.
Buying groceries for others is an intimate job, and a competitive one. Instacart shoppers race to get orders, which the app groups by location, into âbatchesâ. The shoppers look at how much theyâll earn and how far theyâll have to drive, and make quick decisions about which batches to accept. The best ones can be gone in seconds.
Shopping all day is also physically hard. As independent contractors, the shoppers get no guaranteed benefits â although ÂInstacart does provide accident insurance for work-related injuries. Larry Askew, a shopper in Washington, DC, says he can earn more with Instacart than when he was a car salesman, but independence is more important to him.
