This newsletter is about English and improving it. Politicians should set an example and be great orators, but they don’t always succeed. Gone are the days of JFK’s “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country” or Roosevelt’s “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. Linguistic gymnastics that twist and turn English like a fun-house mirror, intentionally or not, are not exclusive to current politicians, however. Below, you can listen to some examples from modern history and across the globe. Finally, I would like to end with some truly eloquent words: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.“ These words are from the opening of the Declaration of Independence, written and signed in 1776. Tomorrow, America will be celebrating its 250th anniversary. May its politicians apply those eloquent words and noble principles to all people in the U.S. today.

What does a maritime archaeologist do? Melita Cameron-Wood spoke to Darko Kovačević for Business Spotlight to find out. Read the full text in the current issue of Business Spotlight.
Maritime archaeology wasn’t an obvious career choice, despite my love of the sea. I grew up on the coast of modern-day Montenegro. There weren’t a lot of opportunities but, through my studies in Alexandria, Egypt, my travels and diving experience, and the international network I’ve built over time, I was able to break into this field.
When I started, underwater archaeology was done with measuring tapes and hand drawings. Technological developments have changed the process, and our teams are smaller now. We use underwater robots, sonar and photogrammetry (to create 3D models). Today, we can train AI to understand a geographical information system (GIS), so it can process huge amounts of data, look for patterns and discover sites on its own.
A couple of projects that really stand out for me are the excavation of a Mycenaean shipwreck near Modi Island, close to Poros, Greece, and a Phoenician shipwreck in Maltese waters, which we excavated and documented using traditional methods at a depth of 100 metres.
