Dear email,
In the current issue of Business Spotlight and below, we have a lot of material on the beautiful state of California. The first time I went there, I was a teen and very excited. For this New Yorker, it was like landing on a different planet. As the 80s pop song goes: nobody walks in L.A. There were hardly any sidewalks! But there was a lot of sun, beautiful people, health food, fancy convertible sports cars that drove through the winding canyons at what, today, I would call “German speeds” – and there was a lot of money. You could see, feel and almost smell the money in ways different from those in N.Y.
Scroll down to read about one Austrian who went to work in Silicon Valley, and his experiences there. And, as a bonus, you can take a fun and informative course about California on our ZEIT SPRACHEN app, which we link to below. Also, if you’d like to know what I find zen when I’m at home in N.Y., you can listen to the audio we have for you.
Next week, my co-host Inez Sharp will have some more entertaining stories for you from around the English-speaking world.

Lighting the way

To read at night, children need light. But in Africa, about 600 million people don’t have electricity, and many of them can’t afford kerosene oil for lamps. Now, Innocent James, from Tanzania, has found a solution: backpacks with solar panels that charge battery-powered reading lights. His company, Soma Bags, sold 36,000 backpacks across Africa last year, and is working with charities and fashion companies around the world to sell the backpacks.

Companies with unrelated side businesses
It makes sense for a car company like Rolls-Royce to have started making jet engines as well – although these businesses separated in 1973. Other companies, however, own businesses that have nothing to do with each other.
Did you know...? • Mars Inc., famous for its chocolate, also owns veterinary clinics. • US consumer goods company Church & Dwight produce condoms, pregnancy tests and... baking soda. • Bridgestone, the world’s largest tyre maker, also makes golf balls. • Yamaha makes musical instruments and motorbikes. From 1991 to 2005, the company also made expensive furniture.
Find out more about companies and their unrelated side businesses in the current issue of Business Spotlight!
