Dear email,
Looking at what our joint team of editors from Business Spotlight and Spotlight have put together for you, a smile comes to my face as I am reminded of the title of one of Sergio Leone’s classic westerns: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Why, you may be wondering? Because we tell you about people who are doing good or are inspiring in some way: the CEO of Bluesky and her efforts to make a more ethical platform than others, and an entrepreneur in the UK who wants to revive an old-fashioned business using innovative and sustainable methods. Then we tell you about an expression used for a bad business practice, and about the ugly purges conducted by the current US administration. Can you hear Ennio Morricone’s iconic score in your mind yet as you read this? 😉
Next week, my co-host Inez Sharp will have some more entertaining stories for you from around the English-speaking world.

ghost jobs
Did you know...? This expression describes jobs that are listed online but don’t actually exist. Companies may advertise positions to make it look as though they’re growing, for example, or leave ads online for jobs that have already been filled. As many as one in five online job ads could be ghost jobs.

Jay Graber
Over the past year, Bluesky, a microblogging social media platform developed by Jack Dorsey, one of Twitter’s co-founders, has seen an explosion of growth. It began in February 2023, as an invitation-only platform, and allowed anyone to join a year later. As of March 2025, more than 33 million people had joined. It’s been a lot of hard work for its CEO, Jay Graber, and her 21-person team. “It’s been all hands on deck,” she told Fast Company.
Many have applauded Graber’s management of the platform. Bluesky has a decentralized architecture and uses an open-source framework, which allows transparency as to how the platform is built and how responsibility for it is structured. Decentralization also gives users more control over their data, and Graber wants to minimize ads. “Our goal is to make sure that, if advertising has a place, it’s a much smaller role in a larger economy,” she says.
In March 2025, Graber appeared at the SXSW conference wearing a T-shirt with the text: Mundus sine Caesaribus (“a world without Caesars”). It was a dig at Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg (who had told The New Yorker that he was fascinated by the Roman emperors, and had even named one of his children “August”). Graber wants to create a world in which lots of people, and not just a few individuals, have power. Of Bluesky, she says: “If it’s a thriving-enough community where it doesn’t need me as a main character, that’s great.”
