What is BIMI?

Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI) is an email specification that enables the display of brand logos next to authenticated email messages in supported email clients. By implementing BIMI, organizations can increase brand visibility, build trust, and protect users against fraudulent emails like phishing.

How BIMI Works

BIMI relies on existing email authentication protocols to verify the sender's identity. To display your logo, you must have a strong DMARC policy in place (p=quarantine or p=reject).

  1. The email client receives the message and verifies the DMARC record.
  2. If DMARC passes, the client performs a DNS lookup for the BIMI TXT record using the provided selector (usually default._bimi.domain.com).
  3. The BIMI record points to an SVG file of your logo and optionally a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC).
  4. If valid, the email client displays your brand logo directly in the inbox.

SVG Logo Requirements for BIMI

Not just any image format will work. BIMI specifically requires an SVG Tiny PS (Portable/Secure) file format.

  • It must be an SVG file (not PNG, JPG, or GIF).
  • It should be perfectly square.
  • It must be hosted on a secure HTTPS URL.
  • It should not contain external links, javascript, or external stylesheets.
  • The file size should ideally be under 32KB.

What is a VMC (Verified Mark Certificate)?

A Verified Mark Certificate (VMC) is a digital certificate issued by a recognized Certificate Authority that verifies your organization has legal rights to the logo (typically requiring a registered trademark). While not all email clients require a VMC right now, major providers like Gmail and Apple Mail strictly require a VMC before they will display your BIMI logo.
