My working life has taken many twists and turns. Often, jobs came about because of where I was living (London, Frankfurt, Tokyo) or my family situation (partner’s job, motherhood). Most were fun (teacher for interior design, TV presenter), but two things stand out. First, my work at Spotlight. What could be better than working with language? The other job was simply serendipity. I once created an idea for a board game and someone took that idea and, with imagination and investment, turned it into a successful product. So, when I read about game developer Shigeru Miyamoto, I understood – albeit in a very small way – the enjoyment that comes from working with games.
There are constants in my life, and one of those is my British tea-drinking habit – six cups of freshly-brewed Darjeeling a day are my minimum. So, I was a bit surprised to read that the teabag was actually invented in the United States. Find out more surprising facts about this iconic product below.

Today is King Charles’ 77th birthday. But the picture above was taken in June – at his other birthday. You’ve read correctly: King Charles celebrates his birthday twice a year.
Isn’t this every kid’s dream? But why should this privilege only be enjoyed by British monarchs? Our columnist is convinced: the economy would benefit if we all got an additional birthday.

The tea bag
|
|
|
|
|
Did you know that tea bags were invented in the US? They developed from the tea ball – a metal tea infuser on a chain – in the late 19th century. The first patent for a fabric tea bag was filed by Roberta Lawson and Mary McLaren of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1901. Their “tea-leaf holder” held loose tea in a mesh fabric pouch.
In 1908, Thomas Sullivan, a New York merchant, began to ship tea samples in small silk bags. On learning that customers were using these bags to steep their tea, he provided gauze bags to make it easier. By the 1930s, tea bags were common in the U.S. and Canada, but did not reach the UK market until 1953 – where most people still preferred loose tea leaves in a teapot.
Even by 1968, only three per cent of tea drinkers in Britain used tea bags. Today, that figure is 96 per cent. In the UK, the tea bag is king.

Who says you have to grow up?

Shigeru Miyamoto has always liked games, and he’s turned his childhood passion into a career. As the creator of the video games Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong, Miyamoto is a legend of the gaming industry. In partnership with the Japanese company Nintendo, he has created a lucrative corporate empire that includes merchandising, films and theme parks.
Born in a small town near Kyoto in 1952, Miyamoto has seen gaming transform from nerdy hobby to mainstream entertainment during his career. Now, he feels like the rest of the world finally understands something that he’s known all along: the experience of playing games is valuable. “We’re finally at a time where multigenerational families all have this common shared experience of having played video games,” Miyamoto told The Washington Post. “It’s really great to see that come to realization.”

Helping people understand genetics
|

Frédéric Coulombe is a genetic counsellor at the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory of the McGill University Health Centre, in Montreal, Canada
I am the first person to work as a laboratory genetic counsellor in the province of Quebec. I spent the early part of my career working in a clinic, which is the most common setting for genetic counselling. These days, however, I analyse and interpret genetic-test results and create reports in the laboratory for healthcare providers. My work involves translating complex information into an understandable format to support discussions with patients.
We have broad categories of genetic counselling – including prenatal genetics for pregnant couples or patients in adulthood who have risk in their families. As genetic counsellors, we receive a mix of psychosocial and genetic training. This helps us to be sensitive to potentially very emotional situations. The ultimate goal is to help patients understand genetic-testing options and make informed decisions about family planning.
As a result of my clinical work, I have developed a high level of empathy and learned how to read non-verbal language. And my lab work has helped me remain at the forefront of research and given me the skills to make complex findings accessible.
