Dear email,
This newsletter made me think about my inglorious schooldays. I was useless at school – my university studies weren’t covered in glory either. I was dreamy, distracted and lacked any kind of focus. The worst part of my day was the walk to school. I was like Shakespeare’s schoolboy in As you like it, with a "shining morning face, creeping like snail. Unwillingly to school.” In spring and early summer, I dreaded the walk to school less. We had a beautiful cherry tree in our garden and I’d hang cherry blossom from my ears and my blazer pockets and later thread blossoms in my plaits from the rose bushes on our drive. I must have looked quite silly, but I felt very stylish.
This is a roundabout way of saying that it’s lovely to have such a spring feeling to this newsletter. It won’t be decorating myself with blossoms in the next few weeks, but there will be a spring in my step.
Next week, Judith Gilbert, editor-in-chief of Business Spotlight, will be back with more interesting topics from around the English-speaking world.

come up/out smelling of roses
Did you know...? Some people seem to be immune to a scandal. They just leave it behind, their reputation undamaged. The English language has a very flowery saying to describe this phenomenon: come up (or: out) smelling of roses.

Beavers are back
In the Middle Ages, beavers were hunted to extinction in Britain. The last recorded beaver was in Scotland in the 1500s. But now, thanks to the British government and lots of public support, wild beavers are back in Britain. According to the BBC, four wild beavers were “released in a Dorset nature reserve” in 2025.

The doctor who preserves Ötzi
In 1991, German mountaineers discovered the mummy that became known to the world as Ötzi. The “man from the ice” had been preserved for 5,300 years in a glacier. Now, he is on display in the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, in Bolzano – and it’s Edda Guareschi’s job to keep him in good shape. How? Read more in our interview.
