Dear email,
Are you a Luddite â someone who deliberately rejects technological advances? Perhaps I could call myself a âselective-Ludditeâ. I donât like cars â except my friendsâ cars when itâs raining and I need to get somewhere quickly. Also, I reject those fancy watches which tell me how long I slept. And I own absolutely no kitchen equipment other than a tea kettle and an ancient hand-mixer. Looking at that list, there is no system to it. Why reject these specific things? I honestly have no answer except to say that Iâve saved a lot of money over the years.
I do have an answer to one of the other questions posed in this newsletter: what defines Britishness? That's easy. For me, itâs a big cup of milky tea (with the teabag left in), a Marmite sandwich and a walk along a rainy beach! If you want to read more about Britain, make sure to browse through our brand-new special issue âThe great A to Z of British lifeâ.
Next week, Judith Gilbert, editor-in-chief of Business Spotlight, will be back with more interesting topics from around the English-speaking world.

Luddite
Did you know...? The Luddites were workers in the early 1800s who protested at the mechanization of the textile industry during the Industrial Revolution. They smashed the machines they feared would take their jobs and burned down factories. The name Luddite derives from a legendary character called General Ludd, a weaver, who is said to have smashed two knitting frames in a fit of anger in 1779 after being reprimanded. The term âLudditeâ now indicates technical incompetence or a rejection of technology.

Big-picture thinking
Itâs easy to lose yourself in all the small details of your day-to-day. These phrases help you to focus on the big picture!
Focus on trends ⢠We need to do more than just keep up with the competition. ⢠What are the trends shaping tomorrowâs workplace? ⢠Integrating AI is one of the biggest challenges on the horizon.
Focus on outcomes more than tasks ⢠Focusing on outcomes gives your people true autonomy. ⢠Outcome-based management gives people ownership over what they do. ⢠An outcome-based management style can dramatically improve results.
