Did you know...? A parasocial relationship is when you feel connected to someone who doesn’t know you personally – like a celebrity, influencer or fictional character. It was the Cambridge Dictionary’s Word of the Year 2025, but the term actually dates back to 1956, when two sociologists noticed that TV viewers felt one-sided “parasocial” friendships with on-screen personalities, similar to their real relationships. Now that people are chronically online, the phenomenon is growing.
