Dear email,
The British royal family are in crisis. There appears to be a deep, almost irreconcilable, rift between Harry and his father, King Charles. Allegations of sexual and financial impropriety have been levelled at Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. And finally, the royals face the daily challenge of trying to keep a centuries-old institution relevant. Itâs tough times for the Windsors. Find out what British people think of the royal family below.
One thing the British monarchy were always famous for were their good manners. But what do good manners actually mean today, in 2026? Is it knowing which knife and fork to use at dinner, or is it more about common courtesy? In our podcast, English, please!, we consider rules of etiquette and good manners in Britain and the US.
Next week, my colleague Rachel Preece will present a special newsletter celebrating Shakespeareâs birthday.

clutch your pearls
Did you know...? The expression to clutch oneâs pearls means âto be shockedâ or âto react in a shocked wayâ. The âpearlsâ here are a âstring of pearlsâ â a necklace typically worn by respectable ladies. The phrase brings to mind the image of a woman putting her hand to her throat in shock. It suggests an exaggerated reaction that may not be genuine, but an affectation. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth criticized the traditional US allies for âpearl-clutchingâ after the attack on Iran in March.

Growing concern
Rice is very important to Filipinos. They have many words to describe it â such as kanin (âcooked riceâ), tutong (âburned riceâ) and bahaw (âday-old riceâ). About 2.4 million Filipinos do the work of growing rice, however, the Philippines still imports more rice than any other country.
The life of a rice farmer is physically demanding, unpredictable and relatively poor. Unsurprisingly, fewer and fewer young people are choosing this career. The average age of farmers in the Philippines is 56 and rising. The same is true in other parts of the world: About 40 per cent of German farmers are over 55, for example. There are concerns about food security if the current generation of farmers is not replaced by a younger one.
Most Filipino farms are also small, on average, just 1.5 hectares â for comparison, the average Australian farm is several thousand hectares. This makes it hard for farmers to invest in labour-saving machinery. Over the next couple of decades, rice farms in the Philippines and many other countries have to become larger and more mechanized to maintain productivity levels.

Should big corporations be broken up?

Companies can get big. Very big. Too big... One simple solution would be: break them up! But is it really that simple? Here you can practise talking about monopolies and antitrust legislation.
