Who doesn’t love a long weekend? As you read this, we hope you're enjoying a three-day break. In many countries, 1 May is International Workers’ Day – which is usually celebrated by not working. In the UK, the equivalent holiday is the early May bank holiday and each year this falls on the first Monday in May.
The tradition of these holidays goes back to 1871, when banker and politician Sir John Lubbock introduced the Bank Holidays Act. Originally, this was a day off for bank employees, but soon, other businesses followed suit. Today, England has eight bank holidays, including one at the beginning and one at the end of May.
I’m not quite sure what I’ll be doing over the long weekend, but I may spend some time thinking about which events I’d like to attend this summer. My dream would be to go to the Hay Festival of Literature and Arts. Find out more about events in the English-speaking world by listening to our podcast.

Did you know...? Ireland is hugely dependent on US companies that send their European earnings through Dublin to benefit from low tax rates. The result is a financial bonanza that keeps the Irish state going. The dependence on US corporate tax policy has been called “leprechaun economics” – a reference to a mythical creature with a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Ireland is afraid to imagine what will happen if – or when – the rainbow disappears.

Footprints, flags, and bags of human waste had already been left on the moon’s surface before Apollo 14 astronauts Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell arrived in February 1971. In addition to carrying out a series of scientific experiments, they found time to have a little fun – to see how it would feel to do some sport in low gravity.
Shepard hit two golf balls and Mitchell threw a makeshift javelin, which landed in the same crater as the first golf ball. In 2011, Mitchell described this as “the first Lunar Olympics.” The golf ball and “javelin” remain on the moon today, 55 years later, in what is now known as the Javelin Crater.

National College Decision Day is the deadline for all graduating students in the United States to choose their college. Seniors wear T-shirts from their new college and take pictures with their friends. It’s a celebratory occasion after years of uncertainty. Although my own College Decision Day was ten years ago, I remember it like it was yesterday.”

In the US, a “college” is where you earn a bachelor’s degree. A university offers bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees. Americans refer to any institution that offers a bachelor’s degree as “college” – even if it’s also a university.

Botton has interviewed celebrities and people aged from 29 to 99 for Oldster – which now has more than 80,000 subscribers – to ask them what it means to them to get older.
