Dear email,
Did you make any New Yearâs resolutions for 2026? Or are you anti-resolution? There seem to be two schools of thought on this topic: the determined self-improvers and those who consider resolutions a waste of time. Find out what the Spotlight authors think about this below.
Most years, I make a couple of promises to myself â the usual ones such as taking more exercise and eating healthier foods â but this year, my plan is to focus on doing things I enjoy, such as spending more time outdoors. I also have a tentative plan to read more. I know itâs a bit of an old chestnut, but when I saw our word of the week, âbroughtupsyâ, I was reminded of how rich the English language is and how rewarding it is to discover interesting words and phrases. I hope you agree! Next week, Judith Gilbert, editor-in-chief of Business Spotlight, will be back with more interesting topics from around the English-speaking world.

broughtupsy

Did you know...? This endearing word is used in colloquial Caribbean English to talk about good manners that you learn as a child. If somebody never learned to say âpleaseâ and âthank youâ and eats like a pig, you might say to them: "You have no broughtupsy!"

Three questions to a university lecturer
Robbie McAllister a senior lecturer and programme leader for film at Leeds Trinity University, in the UK.
1. What are the biggest challenges in your job? At the moment, the most challenging element of my career is a result of uncertainty in the higher-Âeducation sector in the UK. High fees and an unstable job market for young people are leading students to approach degrees with a consumer mindset. Thinking about the financial value of your degree makes sense, but it means universities arenât being thought of in terms of belonging and growth. There are reasons for universities to exist beyond monetary gain.
2. What do you enjoy most about work? Iâm very fortunate that Iâve got a job thatâs dedicated to exploring something Iâm passionate about. I love watching my studentsâ own passions ignite: when they learn something or discover something about themselves and their relationship to filmmaking.
3. Whatâs the most important skill youâve developed at work? Empathy. Iâd like to think I have a small measure of it naturally, but I like working with young people. Iâm grateful that my job involves meeting so many kinds of people.
